What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, refers to a group of inflammatory conditions affecting the tissues that support your teeth. This complex issue, if left untreated, can progress and lead to tooth loss.
Primary cause
The primary culprit is plaque, a sticky film teeming with bacteria that forms on teeth at the gumline. If not removed through regular brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar, also known as calculus. This hardened layer makes it even harder to remove bacteria and maintain good oral hygiene.
The body’s natural defense against this bacterial invasion triggers an inflammatory response. This inflammation is what causes the initial symptoms of gum disease.
Symptoms
The symptom appear as follows:
- Redness and swelling of the gums: Gums should be a nice pink colour and firm, not puffy or inflamed.
- Bleeding gums: Gums that bleed easily, even with gentle brushing or flossing, are a telltale sign of irritation and inflammation.
- Bad breath: Also known as halitosis.
How gum disease progresses
If left unaddressed, gum disease can progress from the early stage of gingivitis to a more severe condition called periodontitis. In periodontitis, the inflammation spreads deeper, affecting the bone and fibres that support your teeth. This can lead to:
- Receding gums: The gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, making them appear longer.
- Loose teeth: As the supporting bone and fibres weaken, teeth may become loose and sensitive.
- Increased risk of tooth loss: In severe cases, teeth may eventually become so loose that they fall out or require extraction.
Prevention
Fortunately, gum disease is largely preventable with good oral hygiene practices:
- Brushing twice daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth.
- Flossing daily: Flossing reaches between teeth and removes plaque from areas that a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Regular dental checkups: Schedule regular dental checkups for professional cleanings and examinations to detect and address any concerns early on.
