Oral Health and General Health
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) has been reminding Australians that there is a strong connection between oral health and general health. Evidence shows that poor oral health can lead to a number of health problems, including:
- Heart Disease
- Diabetes
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes
- Lung Conditions
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
ADA Survey
An ADA survey has shown a lack of awareness in Australia about the connection between oral health and general health. For example:
- 65% of Australians identified that they didn’t know there was a link between their mouth health and their body health.
- 1 in 5 Australians are still only brushing once a day.
- 75% identified that they rarely or never floss.
These findings support and explain the persistent prevalence of periodontitis and dental caries in the community. More on on the ADA website.
Recommendations
The ADA is urging Australians to make sure they’re brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and flossing once a day. They also recommend seeing a dentist for a check-up and clean every six months.
In addition to brushing and flossing, there are a number of other things you can do to improve your oral health:
- Eat a healthy tooth friendly diet that is low in sugar and acid.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Avoid smoking and tobacco use.
- Limit your alcohol consumption.
- See your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings.
