Did you realise that when you brush your teeth, you are only cleaning around one half of your total tooth surface?
Approximately half of the entire surface area of your teeth is in fact between them. That makes flossing an incredibly important daily activity to perform alongside brushing.
Key Points About Flossing
- It prevents decay, tartar build up, gum disease and halitosis
- Flossing once a day for at least two minutes each time is recommended
- Flossing should be routinely carried out by children and adults alike, with parents doing it for their children until their manual dexterity is developed enough up to around age 10
- Use around 45cm of new floss each time, with the ends wound around your fingers
- Use a side to side motion between teeth, as well as inserting the floss gently below the gum line to clean where the tooth meets the gum
Two Types Of Dental Floss
There are two main types of dental floss: single filament (PTFE) and nylon. Both are effective at what they do, with the single filament more suited to smaller gaps as it won’t shred as easily.
