Vaping and Increased Risk of Tooth Decay
In December 2022, The Journal of the American Dental Association published the results of a study they conducted using the patient records of 13,098 individuals who visited dental school clinics for three years.
The study revealed a correlation between vaping and a higher susceptibility to tooth decay (also known as dental caries or cavities), and periodontal disease.
“In this study population, there was an association between use of e-cigarettes or vapes and caries risk level of patients; vaping patients had a higher risk of developing caries.”

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling an aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device.
The term is used because e-cigarettes do not produce tobacco smoke, but rather an aerosol, often mistaken for water vapor, that actually consists of fine particles. These particles contain various amounts of toxic chemicals, which have been linked to health risks.
How people vape
The utensils used for vaping vary in size and shape, and are known as the following…
- vape pens
- vapes
- e-cigarettes
- electronic cigarettes
- e-hookah
How vaping affects oral health
Although vapes or e-cigarettes don’t contain tobacco, they can still harm your oral health and should be discouraged.
Nicotine and other chemicals, such as heavy metals, present in many e-cigarettes can have adverse effects on the body, similar to those of traditional smoking.
Research indicates that e-cigarettes may cause mouth and throat discomfort, alterations to oral soft tissues, and harm to teeth and gums. These findings are based on research conducted on non-smokers who use e-cigarettes.
People who vape should be very diligent with their dental hygiene, and consider reducing or quitting completely for the best chance good oral health.
