After Getting a Tooth Knocked Out
Getting a tooth knocked out can be a frightening experience, but knowing how to react quickly can make all the difference in saving the tooth and your smile.
First
- Stay calm and find the tooth.
- Pick it up by the crown (that’s the top part and not the root).
- If dirty, rinse the root of the tooth gently in milk or saline. Do not scrub the root.
Next
Determine if it is a baby tooth or adult tooth.
For baby teeth
Baby teeth should not be replanted in the mouth.
Check for damage to the gums or other teeth. If all looks fine and any bleeding stops then it’s just case of reassuring your child and waiting for the tooth fairy. If there is any doubt at all though, please contact a kids dentist immediately.
For adult teeth
- Replant the tooth back in its original position in the mouth using slow but firm pressure.
- Make sure it is the correct way around.
- Bite down gently on a soft cloth to keep the tooth in place.
- Call an emergency dentist immediately. Do not delay so you have the best chance of saving your tooth.
Not sure
- If unsure whether it is a baby tooth or adult tooth, place it in milk, saliva or saline and transport it to the dentist immediately.
- Do not transport the tooth dry.
- Always seek dental care immediately.
