Brushing Your Baby’s Teeth or Toddler’s Teeth
Baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth, which is why tooth brushing needs to start as soon as your child’s first teeth appear, which varies between 3-12 months. See our teething chart.
For babies whose teeth haven’t appeared yet, a clean, damp cloth can be used to gently wipe and clean your baby’s gums.
How often
It’s recommended that teeth are brushed at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time. If your little one only has a few teeth then of course less time is needed.
Choosing the right toothbrush
A key factor when selecting a toothbrush for your little one is the size and shape of the brush head. It should be small enough to fit comfortably in their mouth and reach all areas of their tiny teeth. Soft bristles are also very important as they are gentle on delicate gums and enamel.
Toothpaste
Until 18 months of age, a toothbrush should be used with water only, no toothpaste.
As recommended by the Australian Dental Association
Using toothpaste is recommended from 18 months old. Choose a low-fluoride toothpaste, often referred to as ‘children’s toothpaste’ for kids between 18 months and 6 years old. Children’s toothpaste contains a lower fluoride concentration compared to toothpaste designed for 6 years old and beyond.
Tips for brushing your baby’s or toddler’s teeth
Here are 5 ways you can make brushing teeth easier for everyone:
- Use fun and enjoyable products. Look for colourful toothbrushes (with soft bristles), toothpaste with your child’s favourite character or even funny toothbrush holders.
- Make a game out of brushing. Create a story to tell aloud as you brush their teeth. Invent characters and a storyline to keep them amused as you clean.
- Be a great role model. Brush your teeth first to show that you clean your teeth too.
- Sing a brushing song. Check out the wide range of apps and songs available online which are based upon tooth brushing.
- Use a reward chart. Using a non-food based reward chart can encourage regular teeth brushing habits.
Visiting the dentist
It’s important to have your child get used to the dentist so they feel comfortable having their teeth checked as they grow older.
Loud noises and bright lights can be scary to small children if they have not experienced it before, and we want to avoid developing fears of seeing the dentist.
You can have them watch while you have your own teeth checked at first, then eventually have them sit in the dental chair themselves. The dentist will gradually introduce more instruments and work towards polishing their teeth.
Dental visits can start at around age two, or whenever their teeth start coming out. Hopefully, with yearly visits, your child will grow up enjoying coming to the dentist, which will play a big part in maintaining a healthy smile.
