Electric Toothbrush or Manual Toothbrush
Wondering what’s better, an electric toothbrush or manual? Recently you may have noticed that on top of the many brands of manual toothbrushes, there are now more electric toothbrushes available.
So which is better?
Here is what a consultant dentist from the Australian Dental Association has to say…
With correct brushing technique, you can achieve optimal results with both manual and electric toothbrushes, says Peter Alldritt, consultant to the Australian Dental Association’s Oral Health Committee.
Basically if you’re brushing your teeth correctly and aren’t having any issues with plaque then switching to an electric toothbrush won’t really benefit you.
If you have some mobility challenges
Someone with arthritis in their hands, a disability or injury may benefit from using an electric toothbrush as it’s essentially much easier to get the job done correctly. As long as you move the vibrating toothbrush over all your tooth surfaces and not push too hard, your teeth will be brushed well.
Kids like them too
An electric toothbrush can be a good way to get your children to brush regularly as some enjoy the colourful designs, the fact you turn them on and off and how there’s a timer built in. If you have very young children, see our teething chart.
Or you might just like a change
Brushing your teeth everyday for years can become a bit tiring for some so an electric toothbrush can be a very welcome change. And it may push us to think about how we brush our teeth.
The most important thing is to brush correctly
Whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush, the key thing is to brush properly:
- Don’t brush too hard (this can wear away your gums)
- Be sure to brush evenly across all surfaces of your teeth
- Floss your teeth regularly to clean areas a brush can’t reach
