15,000 randomly chosen Australians are going to receive a free dental check-up as part of national study on oral health related behaviours.
When Will This Happen?
The National Study of Adult Oral Health will take place between 2017 and 2018, which will require participants to participate in a phone or online survey, a free dental examination and a self-completed questionnaire.
The study will investigate:
- Rates of dental pain over the previous 12 months
- Sugar consumption
- Tobacco use
- Sugar use
How Will The Results Be Used?
The results will be linked to recent policy changes which include access to fluoride, as well as sugar consumption and smoking. Participants will also be asked their opinions on the introduction of sugar taxes.
With dental disease among the top 10 prevalent diseases in the world, there are growing links between oral health and general health. This national study will also follow up on the 5000 participants from the previous national study which took place in 2004-2006. Find out more in an ABC report here.
